Banos to Cuenca-Feb 16 2019

Wanderbus picked us up in front of the Basilica at 6.40 am and we headed for Banos with planned stops along the way.......1 hour into the journey ( rather rugged over partially washed out road to Riobamba. Here ,we stopped at a market for breakfast.
 Pork anyone...V&D sampled
Fruit drinks made with Volcanic Ice seen in the baskets
the ice used to make these fruit drinks is hauled down from the top of the volcano by a 74 year old man pictured in this photo...he makes the trek 2 times a week....a long climb not to mention the weight carried back...all for $5.00 a block
my breakfast which included eggs on mashed potatoes with sausage and a gravy.
a short stop to take a peek at the oldest church in Ecuador

 may have missed a bit

A trip over a dirt track took into a 5000 Hector acre reserve run by the indigenous Quichuas people who dress in very colourful clothing...who are basically herders and agricultural growers...seemingly mostly self sufficient...here we had a traditional Quichuas lunch of Potato soup, white corn on the cob...some kind of bean, fried Fish from the volcanic lagoons in the area and a sweet tea....

one of many water lagoons....here in the fall a bird species migrating from Canada commit suicide by diving into the cold water....it is said that it literally rains diving birds and attracts birders to witness the spectacle.

 typical dress for the women.

From here we headed for Cuenca about 3 hours away arriving around 7,30pm....it was an exciting ride passing a one point 3 Tractor Trailers before a blind curve uphill in the fog and rain which is an every day occurrence
