Santiago Day 60 Feb 09 14

Yesterday marked 4 years since my wife and best friend left this world, so rather a solemn day for me………. one of remembrance and reflection….Sandy, you are dearly missed……..

Today, I awoke early and headed out on the subway to take in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_of_Memory_and_Human_RightsThe Museum of Memories and Human Rights an era in which the Pinochet Regime ( 1973 to 1990 ) tortured & killed hundreds of dissenters secretly disposing of the remains in the desert or at sea…….families are still looking for lost ones…I did not get to the museum as I became lost and spent a couple hours shopping at the Estacion Central  hub for bus and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustave_Eiffel rail transportation which includes a large shopping centre on either side…..my watch quit some time ago and it was time to replace it…did so for 7450 pesos $ 15.00 US….The buses are up on the 2nd floor above the shopping complex….go figure…….Estation Central Santiago Feb 9 14 002 2 rows of individual ticket booths serve various lines and routesEstation Central Santiago Feb 9 14 003  Estation Central Santiago Feb 9 14 004 All this weight above the mall……….Estation Central Santiago Feb 9 14 005 Estation Central Santiago Feb 9 14 006 The rail station with the bus station adjacent…….and shopping…like small outlet stores….. Santiago Day 59 Feb 08 14

Map picture

Antonio is in the city of Tarija….where he will rest for a couple days……I believe he is well south of the rainy areas but he is considering heading into some of the Amazonia Region………if he goes towards Potosi, I expect he will visit the Salar de Uyuni……it is a large expanse of Salt Flat becomes a shallow lake in the rain season…….also out in the middle it has a Lodge built entirely of Salt bricks……http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

My days are spent in walking about in Providencia and just relaxing in front of the TUBE…..somewhat home sick….even if it is COLD….

Santiago Day 58 Feb 7 14

Prior to my decision to cut short my trip by avoiding Bolivia and Peru, I had been contacted by a Dutch couple , Ivo & Petra, we met at this hotel back in December. They were in Peru and informed me that the region was experiencing heavy rain as it was the regions rainy season which occurs during the summer months. Antonio’s plan was to camp in these two regions as the weather would be warmer…..putting up and taking a tent down in torrential rains is not for me……seen enough rain on trips of this sort and with a rain suit that isn’t doing the job, I pass…wimp out if you like.

I just read in the news that Bolivia has had 5 times the amount of rain that they had last year…….over 40,000 inhabitants are isolated and in need of food and fresh water supplies….38 people have died from flooding, roads are washed out and the army has been mobilized to help in the stricken areas….mostly the central and area NE of La Paz……..I have tried to contact Antonio, noting he has not been on line since I returned to Chile at least not when I have been. I know that internet service is not as available in Bolivia as elsewhere so I suspect this is the problem……..

An opportunity to sell my bike came up last night but as the interested party is flying into Mendoza Argentina on the 24th and I fly home the same day…….had to pass….no time for the paper work…..CRAP…….Today I also found out that I needed my permanent Rol Unico Tributario ( RUT ) in order to sell my bike……..so of to the Servicio de Impuestos Internos-Chile ( SII ) I go….281 General Canto ( this is for Antonio ) where we got the RUT…….they had my permanent card and even though I forgot my passport, the lady took pity on me and I got it ( Antonio have this plus the 2 pcs of Temp Papers with you )……this card is good for life so you won’t have to get a new one next year but it is kept at that office for only 6 months then destroyed if not picked up.Santiago Feb 7 14 002 Left over Pizza with a Merlot 2012 from Frontera…central Chile Winery..$1490 pesos Less than $ 3.00.

Santiago Day 57 Feb 6 14

Today I did a walk about in the NW section of my hotel but not more than 4 blocks away at any point…….it is amazing how quickly it changes from one corner to the next……building diversity, small cafes and shops throughout all the complexes…….did I mention that the Canadian Embassy is only 2 blocks away……had the opportunity to visit there in Dec when I lost my passport…..Santiago Feb 6 14 001 Santiago Feb 6 14 002 snacks anyone…these are everywhere Santiago Feb 6 14 003 Santiago Feb 6 14 004 Santiago Feb 6 14 009 Santiago Feb 6 14 010

Just a few of the many cafes within the 4 blocks of my spot which serve the many office high rises in the area…but these and bars are throughout this city of 7 1/2 million…..Santiago Feb 6 14 005 Santiago Feb 6 14 006 Santiago Feb 6 14 011  Notice the greenery….it actually serves to keep it cool with the light breezes.

The highlight of this trip has been the ride down the Carreta Austral ( ruta 7 )……spectacular scenery…awesome biking….and so much that I didn’t stop to take in……here is a link which hopefully translates to English which illustrates and comments on its origin mentioning all the towns and villages I passed through including Chaiten which in 2008 was all but destroyed when the nearby Volcano erupted.http://www.ayacara.cl/carretera_austral.htm

It’s 6.30 pm and people are lining up to get married at the Mall…..go figure……..Santiago Feb 4&5 2014 006 Santiago Feb 4&5 2014 007 This is my neighbourhood. It will be busy like this until well past 11pm every night….

One thing that Antonio introduced me to….was the finer drinks in life…RED VINO…..Santiago Feb 4&5 2014 008 Both these brands are from The Santa Emiliana ESTATE and are Carmenere 2012 VINTAGE…….the bottle on the right 2800 pesos or $ 5.00US and the other 1500 pesos-$ 3.00……..both have a light fruity taste and are semi dry ….easy on the pallet and excellent with pasta or Carnie……..no not Pedro….meat. Look for them on the shelves of our local liquor store bet they are 3 times the price……….LOL

Ok my life has become rather mundane with too many nappy times though yesterday I did walk for 3 hours…..trying to get my legs ready for HOCKEY……….

I would like to introduce you to my son’s photography……..now bare in mind that he is a Digital Environmental Artist in the gaming industry……and this is a passionate hobby……recently back from Costa Rica with these…… http://www.flickr.com/photos/54773292@N07/

Santiago Day 54/55 Feb 3/4 14

Spent the last couple days resting and using the internet to post my bike for sale; as well as; looking back on some of what I observed or mentioned but not in detail.

It is interesting to note that Restaurants in Chile and especially Argentina usually open for a couple hours around lunch then close until 8 or 9 pm in the evening………so don’t expect to eat at our accustom times…..

Next….signs in most public, small hotels, campgrounds and hostels not to flush toilet paper down the toilet…put it in the waste paper basket next to the toilet….maybe they recycle it……also be prepared to have your own paper with you……it is not often supplied……in the service centres 1 dispenser is on the wall near the toilets….take what you need before the job…… I found this odd as the soil conditions for septic systems looks great.

Breakfast is usually included in your stay but generally consists of instant Nescafe, 2 rolls or small croissants, jam and tang juice….rarely will you get eggs though we did in a hostel in Coyhaique Chile with toast, also rare.

Ordering a Hamburgaisa ( Hamburger ) won’t often be what you expect…….generally this is what you get…what varies is the size….In Rio Gallegos I wondered why my order was taking so long….didn’t complain, I had a quart cerveza keeping me busy. When it arrived, I just stared at it……it covered a dinner plate consisting of 1st dinner plate size ground hamburger patty ,a layer of shredded lettuce, layer ham covered in melted cheese like a pizza and 3 fried eggs on top………no bun…no I only ate 1/2 ….lol

Cerveza is generally less expensive than a coke with your meal……..Pepsi sells for 2/3 the price of Coke and Steak in Argentina is delicious.

Line ups for fuel is common in Argentina……longest wait about 1 1/2 hours……….it’s a must to carry extra fuel as at times stations are far apart.

The wind is relentless, dangerous and you can expect over 1500k each way…..of this condition….most often the wind is from the west with gusts on a calm day of 50k plus……I don’t know how the bicyclist handle this……my bike was knocked over twice on its stand and pushed off the road once.

I showed pics of abandoned railways and thought that no operating rail except city lines existed. I was wrong, though it is 1/2 of what it was after the 2nd World War when it peaked at over 40000 km of line in 5 different gage sizes……..today at least 4 sizes are used….some on small private Tourist Trains like the one in my pic at Esquel which runs from Esquel to El Maiten a distance of 330 km…..Another worth mentioning is in Ushuaia…Viejo Expresso Patagonia known as ( The End of The World Train ) it operates daily carrying tourist into Terra del Fuego National Park….this track built to carry supplies from the Ushuaia Wharf to the Prison in Terra del Fuego which closed in 1947….then the railway in 1952 until someone saw an opportunity…….http://www.trendelfindelmundo.com.ar/

Santiago Chile Day 53 Feb 1/2 2014

I finally get a nice bed in an Apartment that sleeps 4……I am dead tired and I have the worst sleep of the trip…….is it the 80.00 US a night that has me bugged out…LOL…..0ne more night and they are moving me

on the 2nd to another room with a smALLER FRIDGE…….is what I understand for around 50.00 a day and shared bathroom…….ok….I can live with that….I book on line even though I am at the reception desk because it is less than 1/2 the walk in price….go figure…..booked to the 28th. Hopefully this gives me time to sell my bike…..less than 12000k….paid 1853.00 US….asking 800.00 US……for a quick sale. In the event it doesn’t sell, I will give it to a charity.

On line with my sister Ruth while she worked with Expedia and Air Canada to change my flight home……..as my butt is tired, I have decided that it’s time to get back….rumour has it that they are thinking of replacing me in the pickup league so I got to get back on the ice…LOL..Thanks Ruth for getting my flight rearranged…..fly out on the 24th, so I should be home late on the 25th……arrive at 6.10 am but my ride with Northern Airport Services picks me up around 2.30 pm. depositing me at McDonald’s in Gravenhurst. George/John, I should make Wednesday practice.Santiago Febr 2 2014 002 Santiago Febr 2 2014 003 Santiago Febr 2 2014 004 Santiago Febr 2 2014 005 PICS within my block

I have now moved from the 3rd floor to the 4th……..I thought they made a mistake……this unit may have a smaller fridge but everything else including appliances is an upgrade for less money…..before I went to the apartment they informed me I wouldn’t be having breakfast on the 3rd floor but would be served direct at my unit and what time would I like breakfast……so what I thought I was getting and received was the result of not understanding spanish….Antonio is right on…when he remarked that you are just a traveller passing by if you can not communicate……..Santiago Febr 2 2014 006 Santiago Febr 2 2014 007 Santiago Febr 2 2014 008 Santiago Febr 2 2014 009

Yesterday, Rosa, the lady who prepares breakfast brought me a tray of food that will last 4 days….go figure…..included 4 bowls of Corn Flakes 4 each of cartons milk, orange juice, packaged cookies, coffee, peaches, butter, bread, ham, cheese and jams. Though there are the big chain hotels in the area none are situated in such a lovely spot, next to the subway and the largest shopping mall in Chile…and for a fraction of the price……If coming to Santiago….book on line Hotel Piso 3 ( Hotel Tababala ) at www. bookings .com

Santiago Febr 2 2014 010 Looking out my window…in the back ground is the tallest free standing structure in the world in an EARTHQUAKE ZONE…the seven storey mall is attached to it…..
