Cuenca to Mendez January 22 2021

Our route today was on great curvey, scenic road to Mendez though the plan had been to get toMacas.

Great Breakfast at Santa Lucia House

Stopped at a Guitar maker...3 generations of hand made instruments from wood imported from Canada, China And Rosewood from India. The wood is shaved with the only modern tool I saw a hand plane. No clamps used or steam boxes...the wet veneer is shaped by passing the wood back and forth over an iron round pick handle. A planner must exist but we did not see it. A standard guitar takes a week to make....the more intricate with inlays 15 days.....Standard guitar sells for $70.00

Making the neck

Showing us how he makes the inlays by layering and gluing different colours then simply cutting small sections with a knife.

The cut inlays in the match boxes

Turtles are wood and the back of these instruments

Met a couple bikers f.rom Quito...1 on a new VStrom and the other on a Royal Himalayan

Lunch stop Encelbollado

Awesome senery

A short cut through the mountain...no longer recommended....

Late afternoon in the damp clouds

Many waterfalls along this route

Many rock, tree and mud avalanches along the road this afternoon....also hardly any traffic

Our room for the night a little less luxurios than Cuenca....$20.00

Dinner....I couldn't eat gave the crab and clams to Athir....he passed as well...how the hell do you tackle the crab with only a spoon...
