It’s 7:15 am and pouring……just got back from the showers and note my electric heater has quit. Plug in computer to see if it may be the grid….seems so. I spent a warm night with this heater but things are going to get damp and cold quickly…I am stuck here which isn’t bad if the power comes back on. They have a great restaurant in a log structure….but I need heat. I intended on taking a break today and will hike up to the ice fields on a trail behind my tent, of course that depends on the rain. It is now almost 1 pm, still no hydro but Pauline, the owner of the Park has made camp coffee and is keeping me topped up while I watch the rain in the Cafe.
Pauline is from San Francisco, she and her husband took over family homestead property and moved here over 30 years ago. They didn’t have electricity until 2 years ago, using lanterns fired by oil and then solar power……..Pauline is a teacher and her husband works in the fall for the county. They built this place last year near their home to have something to do when they retire…….they have 3 daughters, one is a nurse in nearby Palmer, another is living in Seattle and the youngest lives across from the Cafe.
This is a overnight park, so I am the lone camper…….will have heat in the Cafe soon…Pauline’s husband has just hooked up a generator to the propane furnace. The Cafe and park opened last week and closes after Labour Day…..the staff live in quarters nearby, the cook a young fellow is travelling the world on foot and is here for a second season.
YAY…the power is on 4 pm….I am hungry….sitting in Cafe waiting to be fed…..I took a hike behind my tent sight up a mountain and the following are the pics…. my campsite the Cafe in the distance the Matanuska Glacier as seen from my climb behind my camp. Yesterday I posted a Glacier and mis-named it…it was the Nelchina Glacier
a fall here would make you Bear meat about 300. ft to the Glacier run off
Likely on the road again tomorrow. Goodnight
