Huanacayo to Ayacucho-Dec 3rd-2017

This was a great day of riding on a roads for 5 hours equivalent to the Death Road of Bolivia....except that this one still allows traffic....I will let the pics tell the story.....blind corners are nerve racking as you will meet all type of traffic ...buses, tractor trailers and cars. How they manage this road is mine boggling,
The early curving and wide two lanes going down the mountain
Fish farming on the mountain just after the above pic taken
Oh no the road is changing
Heavy trucks on this crazing road
This mostly single track with the odd place to pass....buses and trucks move tight to the wall to pass with the wheels of the outside vehicle on the edge of the cliff,

A village we passed through...note the railway next to main street.....
 Ken negotiating a water crossing
Running low on fuel, we have not seen a fuel depot in 3 hours....makes sense as we have been running along a road carved out of the mountain with sharp blind corners every 100 yards. Finally a village.....We stop at a police check point and Ken uses sign language for fuel...the policia points up the street. Inside this small store we get a gallon of fuel pored into a gallon bucket then into our bikes...$ 30.00 soles appr $ 10.00.

We arriv in Ayacucho and the Hostel Seville a block from our GPS co ordinates but with the help of a family in a car who stop as we appear lost take us to the hostel. This city is impressive...organized traffic structure and very clean. We are in an upscale large hotel...our room is a suite at $ 60.00 USA a night as opposed to last night at $ 17.00.

I am house confined as I have had diarrhea...sucks ...up most of the night. Ken has been out and about....stopping along the way buying an ice cream cone. We are about to go out and do some bike maintenance.

Huanuco to Huancayo-Dec 2 2017

We were late leaving at 7:30 and would be into heavy morning traffic.....it was my first ride on the bike and right off the bat problems...battery dead. Kick start and off we go....within 1/2 hour still in the city my bike stalls in traffic and needs to be push off the road.....get it going with the help of a lady...lol and make it 1 k and it quits again.
What the **** they had charged it the day before and this was why I didn't get any
Toby had given Ken a cell phone if any problems.....we phone Toby and tell him our problem ...he and a mechanic ride to our location and replace the battery with the one in their bike....still won 't start.....Oh the problem ....no gas. I had heard Toby tell Ken he had a full tank and just assumed I did......nope.

We are finally off. Fantastic scenery all along the way with twisty paved road but the delay in getting on the road would cause havoc later, also in part to Ken's break down in the middle of no where. Turns out no gas....his reserve tank.....nothing.....choke also broken....I head off south as my Gps shows gas closest in that direction.....nope after 20k...so I go north stop to see Ken lying on the ground trying to reconnect choke....I continue another 20 k and find fuel....fill my bike and try to communicate with a older woman manning a small shop at the station...I need a can/bottle to take fuel to my amigo....we sort it out and I get a small plastic bottle which holds about 1/2 a gallon . It is now raining lightly as I arrive. Ken has managed to reconnect the choke.....dump the gas and away we go...another hour lost. Ken has the GPS co ordinates for our first night in Huancayo. It pours for the last 2 hours of our journey and we are have difficulty seeing in the pelting rain as we enter the city....on coming traffic lights blind us, we cannot see the up coming topes ( bumps to slow traffic ). we ride the edge of the pavement because in Peru you are just an obstacle to be push off the road by larger vehicles.......we find the place....gated and pitch black......While Ken waits at the bottom of the steep muddy driveway, I try the iron  solid gate and it opens.....I can see a light near the entry but otherwise it is pitch black and raining hard. I approach the door at the same moment a woman is about to lock the entry. I explain our need in my poor Spanish and she invites me in....takes me up the stairs and shows me the rooms.....great I say dos Habitacions.....go out and retrieve Ken and the bikes which we are allowed to bring into the reception area.

Gloria, the owner offers us coffee and I ask if she can give us some comida (food) and she prepares chicken soup. She has been so welcoming in accommodating us and spent we go to bed. I am up at 6 am and load my bike. Gloria is suppose to go to church but stays to make us an early breakfast. We learn that she lost her husband 6 months ago and is near tears......I give her 3 pins from Ontario which Norm Miller gave me to give out on such occasions....she starts to cry and we hug...with both of us now teary eyed.
Gloria and I share emails. She wants to know if I will be returning that way and I say no....disappointment ......maybe wishful thinking on my part.

We leave wearing wet boots and head out on another days adventure bidding adios with hugs.

Full Day Prepping Bikes Huanuco-Dec 1 2017

Toby and Sarah prepared a great breakfast.....spinach & kale omelette, fresh fruit salad, side of avocado the size of grapefruit, fresh buns and homemade jam...juices made from a cranberry type fruit harvested in the Amazon Jungle...We are hoping to get away before 7 am tomorrow but their is a problem with Ken's bike.....it apparently has a slight front wheel wobble and they are having a new shaft machined locally.....the delay is frustrating as one would have thought they would have noticed and fixed before our arrival. It is now 3:15 pm and still waiting on the repair......but this is manana, manana.
Ken and I took a walk up to a Hacienda near by that was a couple hundred years old and slowly being brought back to life.....most have been something in it's day. It is still in the family and the pics I am about to post taken from the rooftop terrace at Toby's shows the area which was all sugar cane plantation....now developed into a suburb. I went up to take some pictures but the place was gated. as I was about to walk away a gentleman who I presume was the caretaker opened the gate.....I asked in my poor Espanol if I could take some photos....he asked me to wait in sign language while he went for the owner...5 minutes passed and the owner introduced himself and I replied " lo siento mi espanol no es muy bueno....he laughed and replied nor his English...we shook hands and he invited me in to take photos explaining that it had once been a large plantation.......how did I know....was able to understand a couple words as they are almost the same in English. Meanwhile Ken, who had gone for a walk while I waited at the gate was locked out and missed the tour.

 This can't be my bike

My bike awaiting the inner fender install/GPS/GO PRO/SPOT

SORRY it needs a front wheel Ken

You will note re bar sticking up on the roof tops of many of my pics.....though parts of this subdivision is 10 years old....the owners don't complete the project to avoid higher taxes.......you would thing the government would see an opportunity here to pass some legislation to increase revenues.

old tractor with iron spiked wheels

It is now 7:25 pm and our bike are still being prepared, though mine was just a dead battery.
Ken's bike has the wheel axle fixed but the rear rack was hitting on the swing arm and they have decided to cut the rack and widen it............

BUS TRIP TO HUANUCO PERU-Nov 29/30 2017

Nov 28/29 walking tour of part of Lima.....traffic is a nightmare both auto and pedestrian most notably at intersections. Though they have traffic lights with pedestrian seconds counting down, as well as, intersectio Policia waving a wan....it seemed mass confusion to us with all the traffic working at times against the signals, cutting lanes, near misses between bikes, cars and numerous buses cutting one another off.....but it works...lol

Traffic and juggle entertainment well traffic stopped/ he was amazing

Policia Barricks....no pics allowed but I had already taken...place is entire city block with guard houses every corner of building that is totally walled off.

The above pic is from our Lima Hostel....those little shacks on the roof is likely for janitors in the building

Lima Peru-Day 1 continued Nov 28 2017

THe Hostel Iquique our residence until the 29thRoom on the 3rd floor not good with luggage and no elevator   Our 1st lunch.....pollo sopa including a foot...Ken you didn't eat that ?????

Before lunch we trek  about el centro with Kenny hell bent on finding a Geo Cache in the park to no avail..........not happy,

After lunch Ken was feeling knackered with that foot scraping the sides of his belly and we ended up crashing not getting up until 8:30pm. We walked around the block stopping at a cafe for hamburgaesas, one Pollo the other Carne, Ken, why are the Papa Fritos inside the bun as a topping.....

Arrived In LIMA-Nov 28 2017

We arrived late in Lima at 2;15 am..........by the time we arrived at the Hostel Iquique it was 3:30am. The taxi driver Ramos pushed the buzzer at the hostel and awakened the operator. It was 4:45 am by the time we hit the sack and up at 6am. Breakfast over at 7:15 am and down the street a 5 minute walk to the Migracion Office to get the Permiso a Firmar Contratos....a procedure that we learned is to be done on line after paying first at any Bank National in the country who issue a receipt with a number to get the printout Permiso on line. Fortunately for me, the chap ahead of me at the Migracion Office, Damian, an English International Student Placement Co coordinator took us through the procedure and we used a travel agency for the on line part.

Taxi Directo, our taxi service just sent me a thank you for using them along with the route we took early this morning.

Ken and I will take a walking tour of the area as we are not scheduled to bus out to Huanuco until tomorrow night at 10pm for an over night trip through the treacherous mountain terrain. Maybe their is a reason to keep you from looking over the side by a night excursion. Toby at http://www.aroundtheblockmotoadventures.com/motorcycle-rentals/ Purchased our tickets, a few days ago suggesting that we should rest a day in Lima before climbing to a higher altitude....until the next post ...adios

Welcome Peru Addition-Nov 21 2017

I am a happy adventurer today, as my amigo Ken Wettlaufer, has purchased a flight ticket to accompany me for the 1st 3 weeks of my 3rd South American trip.
Ken and I took a self guided trip with Freedom Tours of Ecuador this past February. Toby Shannon of Around the Block Adventure Motorcycle Tours in Huanuco Peru is prepping a 250cc Cross Triton for Ken with only a weeks notice....big thank you to Toby.
Toby has also put a suggested route together for us which will take us to Cuzco and the village of Aquas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu. If time permits we will visit the Colca Canyon which is the deepest canyon in the world.

So stoked to have company for part of my 4 month journey......Nov. 27th is getting close.....Next report will be from Lima Peru....
