Canoa-January 28 2018

Not a lot to report.....my Spanish lessons continued as I worried over the cam tentioner problem with my bike and the fact that my contact mechanic kept saying manana, manana.....Today he showed up and tore down the engine emptying the oil, checking the work previously done and making a new cam bolt......I showed him the damaged parts after wards when the bearing failed on the cam. He said that that particular Chinese Cam has a life expectancy of 6000k. The gasket failed because at some point I had water in the fuel and this contributed to the bearing failure. I had 5860k on the bike when it quit. Secondly, he said that particular motor should be driven no more than 100k without a 20 minute rest for both the rider and motor.....claiming this particular bike is not meant for long duration distance operation. Buying small cc Suzuki or Honda no problem for distance in an enduro style bike.

He is aware that I am headed to Colombia at the end of the week to exit Ecuador and return almost immediately so that I can get my extra days in Ecuador. Otherwise my moto faces a fine of $350.00 US a day for every day over the 60 I was given. So he told me to expect 15 hours to the border with regular stops. Now appears that I will need 4 to 5 days to make the round trip.

Weather here is warm to hot ...currently 32c in the shade but a nice ocean breeze makes it comfortable.

Walks along the beach yield plenty of Inca pottery artifacts.....I have already collected more than I can carry in my luggage. The hills surrounding Canoa yield many pottery items in the farm land and heavy rains wash them into the river which then deposits the shards in the ocean with currents scattering the pieces along the beach.

The past week here at Sundown has been like the League of Nations with 3 girls, 1 boy from Wales, 1 Swede boy and his Danish Girlfriend, the Alaskan couple, myself and a number of Americans.

Sorry.......missed using the camera this week.......the lady sights here are very good...haha

Canoa- January 23 2018

Last night I went out to Trivia at the Surf Shack ....5 of us from Sundown and we asked a couple girls from Utah to join us......we scored 35 out of 40 to win which meant more drinks to celebrate.......
The extra drinks for me was a bad choice....had to cancel my Spanish lesson  this morning....Tom an I had been drinking since 6pm and it is now 10pm.....note these are mucho grande cerveza.

On another note, I was drowning my sorrow as my bike has a new problem. Today on a ride back from town just before reaching Sundown Resort the Cam Chain Tensioner  screw departed for parts unknown leaving my trousers& boot black with oil
Contacted Toby as I had no idea what that hole was for in the engine....I forwarded a picture...

Toby responded quickly and advised that a moto mechanic could fabricate a new one as you couldn't buy it separately from the casing......so I was in a dither....
Don in the picture lower left came to the rescue and had his mechanic out tonight the 24th and he says he will be out tomorrow afternoon and make one on site.

Canoa-January 19th-22 2018

Just a few pictures again over the last few days.....
On Friday, I met Luis in San Vicente again to tour the market and to buy camaron ( Shrimp ) grande.

A picture of  Bahia across the Bay from San Vicente.

 Local taxi service

Preparing the camaron for Friday dinner.

served on a bed of rice
Tom resting after dinner watching the waves while playing with his iphone......

my walk on Sunday morning...scavengers looking for a turtle feast....

one of the Gringo Condos on the beach....

Saturday, I made a spagetti sauce and treated Tom and James to dinner...I am still eating left overs.....

Sadly the beach in areas builds up with trash from the fishing boats throwing it overboard.
On Sunday I was a guide for Tom and James to show them the location of el mercado ( the market ) and the bank atm.

Fresh produce from local farms...

Sunday brunch camaron soap with veggies...but the shrimp were not peeled.....this was followed by a rice and shrimp main course with juice...3 meals $ 9.00

 where we ate.

Today a new couple arrive from McCarthy Alaska, Julia and Chris.......this small town has no services, no hydro, water or sewer  the closest food store is 100k away yet the population of the area approximately 50 square miles has a population of 2500. It was founded at the turn of the century by Rockefeller and friends when one of the richest copper fields was discovered yielding 60% copper to the ton. It is mine out but the buildings are still there.

Canoa- January 14/19

I am behind in updates and will post a few pics taken since last Saturday...........
Taken early morning last Sunday...looking back at Sundown from the beach.

A view looking towards San Vicente approximately 15k away

I have been here 2 weeks and this is the 3rd Turtle I have come upon....deceased...likely drowned in a fisherman's net and cast overboard......sad ....each has been about 3 feet in diameter.
Looking towards Canoa 2 k away...taken fro the same spot as the one in the other direction.

In many of my pictures you see clouds....I am thank full for them as it is blazing hot when the sun is out.....so hot that you cannot walk barefoot on the sand. I am told that Canoa only gets about 100 days of Full Sun but just 17 k away they get many more......the sun does appear most days if only for a few hours ........
Waiting for a bus to take me into San Vicente....cost to go 15k only $0.50....

 San Vincente beach

Looking across the Bay at Bahia

 Random graffiti in town
 Another of Bahia

 Local taxi service

 Preparing dinner de camarone

Served on a bed of rice.......

This is Luis...standing inside the home he is building for his family.....you will notice that the support beams are concrete...this is typical construction with all the supports reinforced with steel rod.
Luis took me to the local San Vincente market today where I purchased 2 pounds of Camarone or 20 for $ 10.00....see the size of them......I am hoping that Luis, my Spanish Instructor doesn't have a nervous breakdown as my progress is no muy bueno......he has a very difficult student possibly with attention deficit disorder and a touch of dementia.......not a good combination.

Canoa Micro Brewery-Jan 13 2018

It was only a 15 minute walked from Finca Verde to the Micro Brewery Beerkingo ......Barry and the owner pictured led us on a tour of his facility....much smaller than those at home but in 2 shifts he puts out 2000 litres a day. He sells all he can produce and I can tell you the 4 flavors are potent compared to the domestic beers.
The brewery is situated on his farm which includes cattle, pigs and a variety of fruits which he sells in the local market..........it is a family operation with brothers and sons.
 Barry in the hops shed.

This is an Avocado Tree and I was given one I picked from the tree.

A Tuk Tuk travelling cooler of beer.

Ice Cold Beer served at the table....this holds approximately 12 mugs as shown......

The name and theme is Viking

It is Saturday at 5 pm and looks like a party is about to happen but our taxi arrives and we need to leave........good thing because this brew has a kick that sneaks up on you.
